Get to Know Jean Better

Jean DeMarco was born in Essex County near Point Pelee in southern Ontario. An outdoors adventure seeker and naturalist from the start, and the third of 12 children in a highly athletic family, she was heavily pressured by her father to become a professional golfer. To thwart his plans, she enrolled in law school at the age of 19 and teetered into Osler on platform shoes and in a miniskirt to begin her articles in 1974 ... intending it to be a brief stop on her way to medical school.

Jean was exposed to every conceivable type of litigation, in every court system, from small claims court to the Supreme Court of Canada, and was even encouraged to take legal aid criminal cases.

As a single mom with four very athletic children, she spent almost every waking hour outside the office, starting at 4:30 a.m., driving children to and from rowing, swimming, gymnastics and badminton practices and competitions. Forced to keep fairly fixed regular hours because of her children's schedules precluded her from working on large cases that might involve travel. Her unflappable personality made her a good fit for the "personal services" cases, which many felt at the time to be "women's work" in any event!
